An unexpected treasure, well worth a visit.
A great place for a family to visit on the public days and evenings. Planetarium, lecture hall, historic telescopes and experiments in domes scattered around the site. You can also join as a member to use the grounds of the dark site for your own observing and imaging.
Very interesting place of historical importance. There are a number of domes, three with vintage telescopes that have been lovingly maintained in working condition and another soon to be fitted with modern equipment. The instrument that Norman Lockyer used to discover Helium is there. There is also the main building containing a planetarium, a lecture room and various exhibits concerning the observatory and Norman Lockyer amongst others.The observatory can be visited on open days when members of the group are on hand to explain things. I understand there are also opportunities for the public to view the skies through the telescopes on some clear evening's.
A great resource for those interested in Astronomy. Look out for open evenings and afternoons on the website for a chance to experience a historical tour and talks for a reasonable entry fee. The evening sessions may give you the opportunity to view the skies through the Victorian telescopes.
Went to an open evening run by the volunteers, really interesting and gave a full tour of the telescopes and computers. Definitely worth a visit, lots of families there as well as people with a bit more knowledge. Fully recommend.
